Parent & Child Photography Workshop at the El Matador Tidepools

At the northern tip of Malibu lies one of the most spectacular shorelines found anywhere along the Pacific Coast Highway – El Matador State Beach. Long stretches of white sands, sea caves, towering cliffs and sea stacks make this semi-hidden beach a favorite among photographers who often hold photo shoots amid the jutting rocks and crashing waves.
This class will take place during a rare daytime red low tide, allowing students to explore shore areas and sea creatures— vividly colored anemones, sea urchins, and sea stars—usually covered by the ocean. The sunset is sure to put on a magical light show at the culmination of class.
This photography class is being offered to children (grades K-8) and their parent or guardian. Parents will provide the camera or picture-taking device to use. Please pack a snack for our break at the halfway point. This will be a valuable and fun experience for both child and parent alike. We do ask that parents/guardians participate with and are responsible for their child during this workshop.
In this exciting, hands-on class, students will learn concepts like composition, perspective, and framing, plus techniques like lighting and background blur. Fun activities introduce students to Macro, Nature, and Portrait/Fashion Photography, and promise beautiful images for your family to treasure.
Our instructor, Deborah Cloyed, runs the afterschool enrichment program Samy’s Camera Photo Camp. Since the program’s inception in 2009, Deborah has taught over a thousand students at thirteen schools across Los Angeles. She considers herself blessed to help children find their creative voices, and never ceases to be inspired by her amazing students.
Note: In order to access the beach, it is necessary to hike down a 150-foot bluff. There is a staircase guiding part of the way down, however there is no handicapped accessible route to the shore.
As with all outdoor courses, if the weather does not cooperate we will postpone the course and email everyone the evening prior. If you do not receive a email, please proceed to your course.
Experience Level:
Beginner, no experience necessary.
What to Bring:
Please bring your camera and be sure that your camera battery is charged and that you have a memory card with plenty of room on it.
We will be outdoors most of the day, please wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing. A bottle of water and snack is also suggested.
